The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child by Donalyn Miller (Paperback)
Donalyn Miller says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. No matter how far behind Miller's students might be when they reach her 6th grade classroom, they end up reading an average of 40 to 50 books a year. Miller's unconventional approach dispenses with drills and worksheets that make reading a chore. Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. The book includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

Reading Level: Parents & Teachers
Reviews:
"I have been teaching 10th grade English for twenty-four years, and nothing has made me consider doing a complete restructuring of my approach to teaching literature prior to reading The Book Whisperer. I recently tried Donalyn Miller's methods for a few weeks at the end of my fall semester; just the desire to read alone increased more than could be imagined. Now through collaboration with my media specialist, I am redesigning lessons and projects for the spring semester so that my students can choose books based on their own personal interests and likes. In relation to the English Language Arts Common Core, I will now focus more on building literary skills through independent reading rather than by the whole group approach as I've done in the past. I am so motivated, but mostly, I am anxious to see how my 10th graders respond. I expect to instill confidence and spark a love for reading in my sophomores just because I am finally going to let them choose every text, and I'm giving them time in class EVERY DAY to sit and read."
"How can I tell you how this book has changed me?!
You will find ideas and support in this book to help your students become better readers. You will find ammunition to face nay-sayers, whether they be administrators or colleagues. You will want to implement major changes in your practices right away. I did! This book confirmed for me what I have felt in my heart, but couldn't put into words. Thank you, Donnalyn Miller, for writing what my heart could not say, and for giving me the push I needed to connect with my students."
